Verizon Super Thursday: Droid Bionic, Samsung Stratosphere, Blackberry Curve 9370 4G, Motorola XOOM 4G LTE.

The Verizon gods have answered our desperate cries. Verizon subscribers will finally be bestowed with some amazing phones starting with Super Thursday (September 8th to be exact). The leaked image below details Verizon’s road map for new phones launching this year.

One curiously missing phone hails from “orchards” of California.

The Motorola Droid Bionic will finally, finally, I can’t stress this enough, F-I-N-A-L-L-Y see the light of day when it’s released on September 8th.  Not to miss a party, Samsung will release a 4G phone named “Stratosphere”, while RIM will unveil a new version of the ‘texteriffic’ Curve. Motorola is also releasing an LTE version of its chunky monkey XOOM tablet.

It was also confirmed that Verizon will not be carrying a Galaxy S II variant, rather a similarly spec’d phone. Is it the Stratosphere?

There are several other interesting phones that will be released this fall. LG will have a do-over with its Revolution on October 20th. It also looks like HTC will release a sequel to its single-core, LTE-guzzling Thunderbolt snoozefest with the Vigor.  Perhaps a dual core 1.2-1.5 GHz chip is in the works? 3-D?

What are you going to get?

Hands-On Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy S II Review

Well what do we have here? Is this monstrosity the Samsung Galaxy S II? Why yes, it is…

uSell.com recently got its hands on an unlocked Galaxy S II, and boy is it big and fast. And apparently it was a contestant on the Biggest Loser too because this thing lost a ton of weight compared to its predecessor: it’s super thin and light as a feather. The iPhone 4 looks and feels fat and chunky next to the Galaxy S II.

Let’s take a closer look, shall we….

Nuts and Bolts

Processor

It’s loaded with a super-fast 1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos processor and it feels faster than the EVO 3-D-clad Snapdragon running at the same speed. 1.2 GHz and 1 GHz dual-core processors are run of the mill these days, but the Exynos processor paired with 1 GB of RAM make this phone fly. Applications load instantly, and the transitions are flawlessly smooth. I instantly noticed the speedy load times. My Droid 2 Global with its 1.2 GHz single core processor takes twice as long, if not longer, to load apps.

Screen

Just like the original Galaxy, the screen has super vibrant colors. The colors simply pop out, but is it too much? The colors look highly saturated next to the iPhone 4’s Retina Display and the EVO 3-D’s qHD screen. Perhaps the phone’s Achilles heel is the low pixel resolution. Coming in at 800 x 480, it’s lower than the HTC EVO 3D’s qHD Display (960x 540) and iPhone 4’s Retina Display (960 x 640). For some (like me), the colors are so vibrant that images look unrealistic. I prefer the more muted colors of a qHD or Retina display.

Camera

The camera is simply fantastic. The rear 8MP camera is excellent, but the 2 MP is the difference maker. It simply blows away the iPhone 4’s crappy VGA camera. You can take pretty decent pictures of whom else? Yourself! Video recording is also exceptional and lag-free. Images are clear and sharp.

Highlights

• 4.3″ WVGA SUPER AMOLED Plus

• 1.2 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 Exynos processor

• Android 2.3 with TouchWiz 4.0

• 8MP AF with LED Flash + 2MP Front

• 1080p Full HD Recording

• 16GB/32GB Hard drive

• 0.33 inches thick

• NFC

Looks

Regardless of how fast the Samsung S II is, you’re going to buy this phone on looks alone. It’s ridiculously thin and has a huge 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus screen. The phone is also drop dead gorgeous (even with its Quasimodo hump). There is a reason why Apple is suing Samsung- this thing looks like a blown up iPhone on steroids. It really is an engineering marvel when you think of housing such a huge screen in such a slim profile.

Wrap-up

The Samsung Galaxy S II isn’t just the best Android phone, (gasp) it’s the best smart phone on the planet (Samsung would love for you to think it’s the best in the Galaxy, but we aren’t sure). For now that is. I was definitely impressed with the phone. It has amazing specs, it’s super thin and has a beautiful design. For those looking to upgrade their phones this fall, definitely consider picking one of these up. Many phones have been tagged as iPhone killers in the past, but this one is legit, it IS THE iPhone killer. The S2 has really set the bar high for the next crop of super phones, but I can’t help but think about what Apple is going to do next.

Pros

Super thin
Blazingly fast
NFC
Excellent Cameras
Huge 4.3” Screen

Cons

Highly saturated and unrealistic colors
TouchWiz
Plastic Body

The Battle of Superphone Supremacy: Verizon Wireless’ Motorola Droid Bionic vs. Samsung Galaxy S II

Verizon was in quite a pickle when Motorola delayed the release of the Droid Bionic after “working on some new updates.” It didn’t help that just weeks after Motorola tweeted that the phone was slated for a summer release, a leaked Best Buy flyer started circulating the Internet, revealing the final design to us mere mortals.

”"

After all the speculation, drama and delays, it FINALLY looks like the Droid Bionic will be released sometime in August. That’s great news for Motorola, and it’s great for Verizon customers, who will finally have the option of buying a superphone capable of fending off other dual-core “4G” super villains from AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile (BTW, what will AT&T and T-Mobile call their planned LTE network, 6G???).

But how will it fare against the Samsung Galaxy S II beast that has been awing fans in Europe and Asia, and which is now slated to be released to Verizon customers within weeks of the Bionic?

The two superphones will most likely be priced the same, and most industry insiders believe the Bionic will resemble the Samsung Galaxy S II — although the specs are still fairly hush-hush.

So if raw power is essentially the same, and the price is the same, what differentiates them enough to allow Verizon customers to choose between them? Which one is better? Does it come down to looks: Bionic’s big and brutish design versus Galaxy S II’s (allegedly copied from iPhone) thin industrial design?

Or will it be the Droid Bionic’s blazing fast speed on Verizon’s LTE network — the fastest cellular network in the U.S. — versus the Samsung’s slower 3G?

Check out our specs below to decide for yourself, but I’ll take the big brutish one, please!
